[dropcap2 variation=”coffee”]I[/dropcap2]t’s a New Year, and that means it’s goal-setting time!

Why set goals?

If I don’t know where I’m going, I’m liable to wind up somewhere else.

If I aim at nothing, I’ll hit it every time.

Being mediocre is easy. Pursuing excellence is hard, but worth it.

Jesus was very intentional. Shouldn’t I be?

Life is challenging. I get tired. When fatigue sets in, I want to drift. For me, this is rarely ever good.

So I’m setting some goals for 2014. Here are the categories I use and the questions I use to guide me:

Relationship with God (my primary relationship – I believe that a positive, intimate relationship with God influences all my other relationships for good):

  • What do I want to see happen most in this relationship this year?
  • What am I willing to do (or to change) to pursue this?
  • Whom will I get to help me?

Relationships with family:

  • Which relationship(s) need my attention?
  • What one thing am I going to practice in those relationships to make them all they can be?

Relationships at work:

  • Ultimately, I work to love and serve others. How am I doing?
  • What one thing can I practice this year that would make a positive impact on my team and co-workers?

Relationships with friends:

  • How am I doing as a friend?
  • Do I want or need to change anything?
  • What one thing do I want to be better this year?
  • What will I do (practice) to help make that happen?

Relationships with enemies:

  • How will I handle it when others reject or oppose me?
  • How will I stay free of bitterness and resentment?
  • What one thing skill can I develop to stay above the fray and focused on my mission?

Relationship with the world:

  • How is my compassion level?
  • What one thing will I seek to practice this year to make a positive, practical impact on my world?

About all the above: Who will I share these goals with who can help hold me accountable?

Keep it simple. Keep it practical. Stretch yourself, but keep it realistic. Make your goals as measurable as possible. Set your direction, and stay the course!

Question: What’s one thing do you want to see different in your life?
