[dropcap2 variation=”coffee”]T[/dropcap2]here’s a lot out there on how to know God better. I’m a little weird (some would dispute the word little) and actually find it helpful to think backwards. By backwards I mean the complete opposite perspective. In this case, How to Know God Better becomes How to Keep God Out of Your Life.
Here’s some of what I came up with. If you want to keep God at a distance…
- Don’t seek him.
You become what you really invest in, so don’t put your time, energy, and resources at God’s disposal. Talk a good game, but don’t follow through and actually pray, read your Bible or have meaningful spiritual conversation with a serious Jesus-disciple who loves God and other people (people like that are dangerous!).
- Stay busy and distracted.
If you keep yourself worn out, you’ll have no energy left to connect with him. Make sure your life is hectic and noisy. Be hurried and worried. This way, you’ll stay disconnected from your heart. If you can keep your heart out of it, you’ve got it made.
- Focus on being in control.
Everybody needs control, right? Zero in on what you want and make sure that nothing painful or bad happens. Make sure people do what they’re supposed to and be swift about punishing them when they don’t. Time has shown passive-aggressive behavior like withdrawal and gossip are very effective.
- Make life all about you.
It’s your life. You’re the master of your fate and the captain of your soul. If you want to be religious, that’s no problem. Just make sure you make your plan and ask for blessing on whatever it is you want to do. Remember, it’s about you, you, you.
Ouch.
Upon considering it, I’m not sure you can keep God out of your life even if you wanted to. More on that next time.
