“My life has sucked and I’m angry at God!” Steve barked.
Steve grew up in an abusive household. “My dad slapped me around a lot, and my mom stayed so drunk she hardly knew my name,” he said.
In his teens, Steve’s anger led him into a life of drinking, drugs, and crime. “I was ticked off at the world and out of control.”
Now Steve was in a wheelchair in a nursing facility, dying of liver disease. His adult life was littered with broken relationships. He was estranged from his family and had lost his only child.
“I’m so mad at God that sometimes I think I hate him,” Steve stammered.
“Have you told God this?” I asked. “He’s a big guy, you know. He can handle your emotions.”
Steve stared at me. “Are you telling me it’s okay to be mad at God?”
“He already knows. You might as well let it out,” I answered.
The next time I visited, Steve was noticeably different.
“Hey buddy! Guess what? I unloaded on God. He took it. I’m convinced he loves me and forgives me. I have peace with him, and it feels great!” he said.
Steve passed away a week later.
Four quick takeaways from Steve’s story:
- Go ahead. Let it out.
- God can handle it.
- He longs for you to share your heart with him.
- He loves you.
You might be surprised at the results.
