[dropcap2 variation=”coffee”]I[/dropcap2] really want to be calm and unflappable in the face of anger. Wouldn’t that be great?
It’s an angry world. Things will happen to us, some of them tragic and painful. People will get angry. Some people will come at us while others will try to punish us quietly. We’ll get blamed for stuff we’re not responsible for.
Yes, it would be nice to stay peaceful in the midst of such craziness, but how do we do that?
First, we can remind ourselves that their anger is not about us but about them. Remember that nothing can come out of a person except what is already in them. Jesus said these things come “out of the heart of man.” The anger was inside them to begin with.
Their buttons got pushed, and out their anger came. Let’s not take responsibility for other people’s buttons. They have to do that.
Secondly, if we’ve done something wrong, we need to own up. We apologize, ask forgiveness, clear the air, and move on. We simply act while resisting the temptation to wallow in guilt. We refuse to take on their anger because that doesn’t help us or them.
As we practice these things, we’ll find ourselves living less controlled by the emotions of others.
Now that would be awesome!
