[dropcap2 variation=”coffee”]M[/dropcap2]y high school swim coach drummed a phrase into our heads that still fascinates me: Garbage in, garbage out. Simple. Profound.
He was, of course, talking about our minds. Put garbage in, and you’ll get garbage out. Negative thoughts produce negative behavior. It begins in our minds.
No wonder a guy named Paul in the New Testament urges us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Different thinking leads to different behavior. Healing and growth begin in the mind.
All of us have voices in our heads. You know what I mean – voices from the past. Here is some of what my past says: “You’ll never be good enough.” “You’re damaged goods.” “You’re worthless.” “No one will ever really love you.”
What do the voices of your past say?
They’re speaking all the time. It’s critical we hear what they are saying and seriously evaluate those messages. You see, we’ve gotten so used to these voices that the real danger is we don’t actually hear them anymore – we just act on them, almost like a reflex.
Take a moment. Get some paper. Write down at least two or three messages from your past. Take a good look at them. How do they square with who Jesus Christ says you are?
Now, tear that piece of paper up, wad it up in a ball, and toss it in the nearest trashcan.
Garbage in, garbage out.

It’s time to take out the garbage.
